Q: How much omega-3 fats should I have in a day for a healthy heart?
Consuming omega-3 fats has been associated with lower risks of heart disease, stroke, heart failure, heart attack and death from coronary heart disease. There are four types of omega-3 fats.
We should have 1g of ALA (alpha linolenic acid) per day from plant sources such as 30g 1 handful unsalted walnuts, 15g 1tbs chia seeds, 4g 1tsp linseeds, 1 slice soy and linseed bread or 1tbs canola/soybean/vegetable oil.
We should have 250-500mg of EPA/DHA/DPA (eicosapentaenoic acid/docosahexaenoic acid/docosapentaenoic acid) per day from marine sources which can be obtained from 2-3 serves of fish per week such as 150g fresh fish or 100g canned salmon/sardine/tuna.
